New Era® - an iconic brand in American headwear
New Era® turned 100 years old in 2020 and this milestone marked an incredible journey of success for the company.
In 1920, Ehrhardt Koch pursued the American Dream and made it come true. With only two loans – one from his sister Rose and one from a co-worker, Joe - he launched the proudly family-owned "E. Koch Cap Company" in Buffalo, New York with 14 passionate employees to produce 60,000 caps that year!
In 1934, New Era® proudly began its journey in Major League Baseball by manufacturing caps for the Cleveland Indians. By 1954, Harold Koch modernised their fitted pro cap and named it the 59Fifty or "Brooklyn Style".
Over time word about these quality products spread across MLB teams - such that by 1965 around half of them were supported with headwear from New Era®!
Championing Headwear in American sports and across the globe
In 1993, Major League Baseball made a historic decision when they granted New Era® exclusive licence to produce on-field baseball caps for all teams. This marked the first time any headwear company had ever been granted such a privilege, and would go on to firmly establish New Era®'s place as an iconic brand in the world of sports apparel.
In 2001, Chris Koch was appointed CEO of New Era® - and it marked the start of a landmark era for the iconic brand. With his passion, determination, and vision to make New Era® synonymous with excellence in sports apparel, Koch quickly set to work diversifying the company's reach into football and other sports leagues.
In 2012 this decision was vindicated when New Era® acquired full exclusive sideline rights for the National Football League (NFL), becoming their official cap provider. This was followed by another groundbreaking deal in 2013 with Australian Cricket's Big Bash League and a further partnership with Manchester United in 2015.
But it was in 2017 that the CEO's ambitions truly paid dividends – as New Era® signed an exclusive agreement granting them on-court product rights for the NBA – making them the first headwear company to have exclusive rights for MLB, NFL and NBA simultaneously!
Today, thanks to their long-standing commitment to quality, style, and innovation New Era® continues to be one of the most trusted names in sports apparel.
